Shima Star: Dance With Color celebrates unity in community through an iterative cycle of painting, photography, digital transformation, printing, collage, and gestural mark-making. As an observer of social dynamics, Star uses layering, reinvention, and continuous transformation to explore how personal narratives, cultural traditions, and human relationships intersect and evolve, illuminating the potential for deeper connection and collective unity across diverse communities.
Dance with Color: Unity in Community celebrates the bonds that unite us across cultures, generations, and geopolitical borders. Through vibrant painting, collage, symbolism, and participatory installation, Shima Star (b. 1972, South London, England) explores the idea that while our individual histories may differ, we are all part of one human story. Her chosen surname, Star, reflects a personal act of self-empowerment and self-definition. Embracing the star as both symbol and identity, Shima draws upon its universal associations with guidance, possibility, and connection. This motif resonates throughout the exhibition, reinforcing the belief that every individual contributes to the greater constellation of humanity.
Inspired by the movement, bold colors, and harmony of Henri Matisse's The Dance (1909), the exhibition uses color both as a universal language and an act of rebellion. As an interdisciplinary artist, Star uses traditional painting techniques fused with digital photography of parts of her prior artworks, creating interwoven imagery that reflects the ways communities are enriched through diversity, exchange, and communication- both digital and analog.
Central to the works are the Star People, archetypal figures influenced by ancient mythology, sacred symbolism, and celestial imagery found across cultures. The Lone Star series exemplified by Cloud Dancer I and II show individual Star People in isolation, yet upon closer examination one finds that there are individual components and symbols that repeat throughout the exhibit, culminating in Dance with Color where the singular Star People finally converge in an unending cosmic dance. These recurring forms speak to the enduring search for a union with something larger than ourselves.
This exhibition wants the viewer to remember that “a lone star is never alone.” Dance with Color: Unity in Community celebrates both individuality and our common origins- "we are all made of stardust and seawater.” Star’s works ask the viewer to reflect on how our own histories not only shape and define us as individuals in the present but also connect us to the past, the future, and to a greater cosmic whole.
